It is Time to Order Grass Fed Beef

We have a limited number of beef shares available for this upcoming summer.  The reason it’s limited is because our land determines the number of animals, not the market place.  We have had our beef tested at WSU and it received great reviews for flavor, tenderness, and a healthy omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids ratio (which makes it heart-healthy, unlike typical grain fed beef).  The researcher stated that our steaks were the best grass fed steaks he had ever tasted in the United States or New Zealand! 

If you are interested in ordering beef from us, here is how the program works.  We sell the animals by the ¼, ½ or whole cow.  We will custom raise the cow for you.  With your beef share, you will receive hamburger, steaks and roasts and the butcher will walk you through the selection process.  In September/October we will have the animals butchered and you will pick them up at Del Fox Meats in Stanwood.  A ¼ cow will cost approximately $450.00 ($380 to us and $70 to Del Fox Meats).  Typically a ¼ of a cow yields about 90 pounds of cut and wrapped meat or approximately 2½ shelves of a large upright freezer. All of our numbers are approximates and will vary up or down based on the finished weight of the individual animal.

To place your order or get more questions answered please call us at the office.  Once you have reserved your beef share we will need a deposit of $200 (due by March 15th) with the rest due when the animal is harvested in the fall.  We know you’ll enjoy it!

Organically Fed Pork Available in April

New this year!!  We are working with Ken and Kathryn of Horse Drawn Produce on Lopez Island to bring you a different choice for your ham, bacon, sausage and pork tenderloins.  We have never offered pork before and after meeting with Ken and Kathryn, I wanted to offer their farm raised pork to our customers.  Their farming operation is a far cry from the institutional farms that distribute through grocery stores and the restaurants. 

The pork will be available in April. You can order a ½ or whole animal.  A ½ pig costs about $350 ($295 to us and $55 to Del Fox). Your approximate yield is 63lbs of meat.  The average cost per lb is $5.50. 

We will need your deposit of $200 per ½ side of pork by March 15.

On the farm

A few weeks ago, we were thinking that we could start working the ground.  Well after a week of steady rain and Snow?!?!? We have gone back to waiting for the soil to dry out.  In all reality, we rarely can start farming in earnest until mid to late March.  I imagine around the beginning of April we will be planting spinach, radishes and sugar snap peas. And by late May/early June we will be harvesting some Nutrient Rich Foods from our own fields.
